Community-supported healing services

Our equitable treatment space model not only supports you with more ease in your body and being and a sliding scale when you need it, it includes our practitioners in the circle of healing. Bodyworkers who make a comfortable living wage and are well supported are more likely to have long, joyful, and truly sustainable careers, offering exceptional healing work.

When you schedule an appointment with one of our practitioners, you are supporting two local, mission-driven small businesses - while getting the care you need to move more freely in the world. All of our member-practitioners are independent business owners participating in Durham Community Bodywork’s vision of a better world through resilient nervous systems, improved access to healing services, and sustainable, meaningful work.

Each member sets their own rates and policies (please see practitioner bios for more information), and we all offer sliding scale sessions. We share a foundation of practices promoting presence, equity, and collective care. We are connected through the overlap of our community agreements, our individual skills, and your body’s own unique healing wisdom.

Please see our member bios below to learn more about the individuals that make up this (internal) community that supports you (our whole community!)

What To Expect

Arrival

Arrive a few minutes early to get settled in our cozy waiting area, have some water, and use the (gender-neutral) bathroom if needed. Your practitioner will greet you at your session start time.

If this is your first time with us, please arrive 10 minutes to complete your health history form before your appointment. Your health history asks questions that are relevant to your treatment only and is confidential.

Your Session

Getting To Know You

You’ll begin your session in conversation with your massage therapist about your current state of being and your needs and desires for your session. Together, you’ll agree on an intention or treatment plan that reflects the meeting of your needs, your own knowledge of your situation, and the practitioners skills and abilities. We encourage you to explore what might support you on the day of your session.

Your session may be clothed or unclothed/draped, depending on your needs and what feels most supportive to you. If your session will include unclothed work to any portion of your body, your practitioner will exit the room to allow you time to undress and get settled on the table, and will knock and confirm consent before re-entering the room.

Bodywork

The shape of your session will be individual to you as determined in your opening conversation. Your practitioner will work to meet you where you are with respect, kindness, and skill. Your sense of comfort and sense of safety is of the utmost importance, and bodies and spirits shift, even in stillness. Your practitioner is here to support you and will check in with you and actively work to meet your needs within their scope of practice and skills. Please note, in service to promoting safety in this work, both you and your practitioner have the option of ending a session at any time, for any reason.

Closing

Your therapist will allow some time for you to transition between the table and a more upright/alert state, exiting the room to allow you to dress if any portion of your session has been unclothed. You’ll have a conversation to check in on how you are feeling and how that compares with the start of your session, identifying anything that has shifted (or stayed the same), anything that was useful, and any curiosities to explore on your own or in future sessions.

Completion

Your practitioner will say good-bye and you are free to go slow if you have the time, and gather yourself before going back out into the world, carrying the effects of your session with you.

Payment

Our practitioners set their own rates (please see bios and their websites for more details.) Your practitioner will take your payment via cash, check, or credit card before or after your session depending on their own workflow.

Sliding Scale

Each of us offer a self-determined sliding scale with no income verification. We believe in the power of regular care, and making regular healing care more affordable is a primary part of our mission.

Paying It Forward

Our sliding scale work in individual sessions is supported by a process similar to our Community Bodywork Clinics - a portion of every client payment goes into the practitioner’s community fund. When you need a sliding scale, you pay what feels right for you that day within the practitioner’s scale. The community fund ensures your practitioner is well-cared by covering the difference between your payment and their base hourly income. All clients contribute to this fund, which means that when you use the sliding scale, you also participate in our mission by helping to make this care more available to your neighbors.

Location

Our treatment space is located at 906 Broad Street in the Health Associates building house, a few blocks north of Dollar General and Papa John’s Pizza. Come to the front of the building, ring the doorbell, and we’ll come greet you!
